What is Part P and how does it affect me?
We are delighted to let you know that, after years of lobbying by the industry associations, the Government has launched Part P of the Building Regulations in January 2005.
Part P is designed to enhance electrical safety so as to make dwellings and business premises that have a common supply safer. Minor jobs like replacing sockets and light switches will not be affected, but anyone thinking of, for example adding new circuits, including fitting new kitchens or bathrooms, would have to get building control involved. The alternative is to get the work carried out by a suitably qualified expert. Reginald Maude Ltd is already registered as an NICEIC competent installer and is authorised for Part P self certification status.
Householders may carry out their own improvements but should notify Building Control prior to commencement and be certified afterwards by an approved company. All electrical installation work must comply with Part P and it would be wise to check that any firm used for this type of work holds Competent Person Status and is able to self-certify compliance with Part P.
